The state-owned electric utility of Ivory Coast, Côte d’Ivoire Energies (CI-Energies) has launched a call for tenders for the construction of the Kossou floating solar power plant and its associated transmission network
The floating solar power plant will be developed in the Kossou dam lake on the Bandama River. The Kossou dam, which has been in operation since 1972, has a 105 MW hydroelectric power plant. The renewable energy project to be built in the lake of the reservoir is planned to have a capacity of 20 MWp
CI-Energies launched the tender nearly three years after the Ivorian government announced the construction of the floating solar plant. The call for expressions of the floating solar power plant is open until March 29, 2022. The tender aims to recruit a company to execute the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract
The selected company through the tender will develop and maintain the floating solar power plant, as well as the transmission network of the future project. The floating solar facility is being financed by the French Development Agency (AFD) with an €80 million loan
The floating solar PV plant will join two other under-construction facilities, under public-private partnerships (PPP) for a total capacity of 60 MWp. These projects developed under the ‘Scaling Solar’ program of International Finance Corporation (IFC), will support the Ivorian government’s clean energy policy
Ivory Coast wants to increase the share of clean energy in its electricity mix to 16% by 2030. The government is planning to meet the country’s increasing energy demand by adding around 150 MW per year through IPPs
According to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), the Ivory Coast had only 13 MW of installed solar power at the end of 2020. Currently, the sub-Saharan country relies heavily on fossil fuels, notably oil and natural gas
